Shakira to receive Video Vanguard Award, perform at MTV VMAs for first time in 17 years

Shakira is set to receive the prestigious Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards next month, joining a list of esteemed artists including Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott.

In an exciting development, Shakira will make her return to the VMA stage after a 17-year hiatus.

Throughout her remarkable career, the Colombian singer has secured four VMAs. Her journey began with a win in the International Viewer’s Choice (Latin America North) category back in 2000.

This year, Shakira’s influence continues to shine as she amasses four nominations: artist of the year, best collaboration (for “XQG” with Karol G), and two nominations in the best Latin category — one for her collaboration with Karol G and another for her solo single, “Acróstico.”

The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards nominations are dominated by Taylor Swift, who garners eight nominations — seven linked to her “Anti-Hero” music video and an extra nod in the artist of the year category. SZA closely follows with six nominations.

Circle the date for the VMAs, which are scheduled to take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on September 12th.
